Object Description

Movie of Drosophila melanogaster embryogenesis spanning stage 5 to stage 10/11.  Lateral view with anterior to the left, ventral down.  Live imaging using DIC optics.  At the start of the movie, the embryo is making the transition from a syncytial blastoderm to a cellular blastoderm as cell membranes form and pull down between nuclei at the surface.  The pole cells (primordial germ cells) are visible at the posterior end.  Gastrulation then begins with mesoderm cells internalizing through the ventral and cephalic furrows.  The embryo then undergoes germband extension.  By the end of the movie, segemental grooves are visible in the ectoderm, and the foregut and hindgut have invaginated.
