Specification of the germline is critical to ensure genetic information is transmitted to the next generation.  Germ cells not only produce the male and female gametes, but they have the potential to form all cell types upon fertilization.

Stem cells are responsible for the continuous renewal of cells forming various tissues throughout the body of an organism.  They are undifferentiated cells that can divide indefinitely to produce more stem cells and cells destined to differentiate.   Organisms with regenerative capabilities utilize stem cells or stem cell-like behavior in order to regenerate organs and body parts in the adult.
