Object Description

Three dimensional reconstruction of a Drosophila melanogaster embryonic ventral nerve cord (stage 15) created from confocal image data.  Immunostaining for Elav (red), BP102 (blue), and Even-skipped (yellow). Where Even-skipped and Elav overlap, nuclei were maintained in yellow.  Initially imaged from the ventral side, anterior up.

Elav is an RNA binding protein located in the nuclei of all neurons.  BP102 is an antibody that binds to axons of the central nervous system.  Even-skipped is a homeodomain-containing transcription factor.  While Even-skipped is initially expressed in a pair-rule pattern, at this stage it is expressed in a subset of neurons in the central nervous system, a ring at the posterior end, and a subset of heart cells (the latter two patterns are not visible here).
